Cannington Community School Perth

It was wonderful to work with the “teams” at Cannington. 6 groups that comprised teaching staff and learning assistants. The research based strategies from Day 2 of Ruby Payne’s work provides great understanding of how different young people learn and think. It gives loads of strategies for scaffolding work so that students can see what learning is required.  Thank you for inviting me Andrew.

Kath’s Journal

NEW TAKE ON OUR WORK:TOOLKIT FOR TEACHER AIDES WENT OVER A TREAT!! The wonderful teacher aides at Kilkivan Primary School were our guinea pigs for the toolkit we have put together for teacher aides to use to support the students they work with. Many thanks to Kath Elliot, for her handout on Learning Disorders and Disabilities. Sal’s background in Special Ed working with children with high order disabilities means she can give excellent advise for children with diagnosed disability. Chunking was the big message as well as planning and goal setting in a way that gives visual prompts and allows for mini steps and lots of celebration on the way. Kilkivan is a great little school, very friendly staff, many thanks to Stuart Bell for organising us to visit and special thanks to the ladies in the office for their assistance on the day.

Wonthaggi Secondary cup day training

It was great to see some familiar faces at Wonthaggi Secondary College, it continues to be a school that takes extra care to provide alternative learning options. Staff from both McBride and Dudley Campuses attended and discussion centred around catering for all students, whatever their need may be.  Thanks to Gaye and Jacqui for organising my keynote there.

Welcome to my blog

Just back from Kilkivan and Toowoomba where I ran a tactile learniing activity in several classroom. It was amazing, students didn’t want to finish up, kept going after the bell…I reckon that is a pretty good test of effectiveness.

It is a simple idea where students map their local community on large $2 shop tarps. It is a wonderful group learning task, where everyone has a role, have a look in our workshops under “Teach me so that I can see it, touch it and move

Many thanks to Racheal at Toowoomba North and Amelia and Robyn at Kilkivan.

Both schools are great examples of learning communities that have sooo much going for them, especially involved teachers, so committed to what they do and gorgeous kids, just lapping up learning.
